A Member of the Order of Canada, John Fanning is a veteran of nine seasons at the Metropolitan Opera. His roles there included John Plake in SLY, co-starring with Placido Domingo, Mandryka in ARABELLA, the Father in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, Count Almaviva in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Mr. Astly in THE GAMBLER conducted by Gergiev, Faninal in DER ROSENKAVALIER and the Four Villains in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN conducted by James Levine. John has also sang Der Musiklehrer in DER ROSENKAVALIER for the Houston Grand Opera and appeared in LOUISE and THE BALLAD OF BABY DOE at the San Francisco Opera. The Villians in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN marked his debuts at both the New York City Opera and the Minnesota Opera. He also sang Jokanaan in SALOME for the Arizona Opera and Kentucky Opera.
He has sung Sharpless in MADAMA BUTTERFLY for The Canadian Opera, English National Opera, Kentucky Opera and Edmonton Opera, Wotan in DAS RHEINGOLD, DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, LA TRAVIATA, LA BOHEME, RIGOLETTO, TALES OF HOFFMANN for Pacific Opera Victoria, the title role in WOZZECK for Montreal’s Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, the title role in FALSTAFF for Opera Hamilton and Edmonton Opera, Germont in LA TRAVIATA, the title role of Sweeney Todd, as well as Tonio in PAGLIACCI and the title role of GIANNI SCHICCHI for Calgary Opera.
John has also been heard as Count di Luna in TROVATORE, Villians in TALES OF HOFFMANN, Iago in OTTELO for L’Opéra de Québec, Kolenaty in THE MAKROPOULOS CASE in Nantes and Angers, France and MACBETH, Balstrode in PETER GRIMES, Lescaut in MANON LESCAUT and Der Musiklehrer in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS.for l’Opéra de Montréal. For the Vancouver Opera he has sung Faninal in DER ROSENKAVALIER, Rance in LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST, LA BOHEME, and Tonio in I PAGLIACCI, and will return there next season for Don Alfonso in COSÌ FAN TUTTE.
Mr. Fanning’s 2006-2007 season began with Wotan in the Canadian Opera Company’s production of Wagner’s DAS RHEINGOLD conducted by Richard Bradshaw. The opening night marked the official inauguration of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and the beginning of the COC’s much-anticipated RING tetralogy. He was also heard as Gunther in DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG and was much praised for the power and commitment of both portrayals. He has appeared with the COC in many roles including Count Tomsky in PIQUE DAME, Jack Rance in LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST, Peter in HÄNSEL UND GRETL, and most recently as Waldner in Arabella.
Featured as Firmin in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA both on the national tour and at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto, he was the operatic voice of many commercials, starred in CBC’s WIND AT MY BACK and was featured in Norman Jewison’s film, MOONSTRUCK. Mr. Fanning is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the George London Grant to Singers. John enjoys teaching and giving masterclasses and has recently retired from the voice faculty at The University of Montreal.
