The 2017 Newfoundland Opera Colloquium: “Designing Civic Impact in Opera”’s current strategic plan Charting our Civic Impact, articulates one goal: to lay the groundwork for increasing opera’s civic impact.  The Newfoundland Opera Colloquium is a key part of achieving our goals. Part think tank, part workshop, part capacity-building program, the colloquium will explore tools, practices and protocols to deepen civic engagement, and provide possible solution to the question: What role can opera play in civic impact and social change?

Opera on the Avalon is hosting this important gathering to lead the sector in innovative thought and practice around artists, opera companies and communities working together to build civic health. It is the first time that the colloquium will be east of Toronto, and it is usually held at the Banff Centre.

The Colloquium will feature invited speakers such as Arlene Goldbard and Dr. Susan Knight to deliver presentations, provocations, and results of practice-based research in design thinking and civic practice, as well as deliver a hands-on workshop using tools, processes and approaches they can be applied by any arts organization in communities across Canada. Attendees will include directors and board members of opera companies from across the US and Canada, board trustees and significant donors, as well as Marc Scorca from Opera America.
