Opera on the Avalon’s 2024 Fall Festival

Published 12 Sep, 2024

Opera on the Avalon is proud to present its 2024 Fall Festival, offering three unique live events for people to enjoy. As summer draws to a close, we all long for those warm days spent with music and friends. While we can’t guarantee the warm weather, we can guarantee three intimate events that will bring people together through the power of song. With performances on September 25th, 26th, and October 2nd, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Rum Ragged at the Colonial Building

What better way to open the festival than with a live concert from Rum Ragged! Taking place at the historic Colonial Building in Downtown St. John’s on September 25th at 7:30 PM! Rum Ragged is known for their bold approach to the traditional music of Newfoundland & Labrador. Taking the music scene by storm, they recently won 3 MusicNL awards, including “Music Video of the Year” for their collaboration with us here at Opera on the Avalon on their song and video titled “1949”.

An Evening of Song featuring Meghan Herder, Abra Whitney, and Bill Brennan

The festival continues September 26th with an evening of song featuring Meghan Herder, Abra Whitney, and Bill Brennan who will share the stage at the newly renovated Terrace on the Square, blending their unique talents to create a beautiful evening of song. Meghan Herder brings her technical precision and emotional depth as a vocal performer, while Abra Whitney is known for her authenticity and the emotional richness of her performances. Joining them is Bill Brennan, a celebrated pianist, percussionist, and composer with over three decades of experience working with both local and international artists.

Ryan McDonald at Commissariat House

Our final event will take place on October 2nd at the historic Commissariat House in St. John’s. The venue’s intimate setting is the perfect match for an evening with Ryan McDonald, a countertenor known for blending operatic mastery with innovative artistic productions. Hailed by Opera Canada for his “luminous voice” and “natural musicality,” Ryan’s performances offer a combination of dynamic vocals and deeply emotive storytelling. His repertoire ranges from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas to Britten’s Turn of The Screw.

In 2024, Newfoundland & Labrador’s Year of the Arts, we are especially proud to present culturally enriching events. These performances not only celebrate our artistic traditions but also invite everyone to experience the magic of live music in intimate settings. We extend our thanks to the talented artists who have committed to these events and to our sponsors for making them possible.
